Fire Alarm Facts

Everyone knows that you need to have fire alarms on every level of your house, and even in different area's of each level.

What most people don't realize is that kids sleep most of the night in an extremely deep sleep.

Think about it, your tot falls asleep on the couch and you pick them up and carry them into bed. They don't even stir.

When the smoke alarm goes off, more than likely they are not going to wake up to the noise either.

You need to make sure if the alarm ever goes off, do not assume that your child will waken and meet you at the designated spot, you are going to have to go get them.

Do have fire drills, and try to practice at least twice a year.

A good way to remember to do this is when the time changes.

When the time changes it is a good idea to put new batteries in your alarms, at the same time run a practice emergency with everyone in the house.

I also took my daughter to a carnival that had a fire truck at it. I asked the firefighters to don the gear and show her what a fire fighter looked like that was trying to help her. He put on all the gear and got on his hands and knees and pretended to look through smoke.

We always tell them that fire fighters are our friends, but you never see them with all the gear on, and for kids that could be scary if they don't know what it is.
